Reflections on Junior Young Friends Camp, 2026

The first JYF camp since 2020 was a cracker!

8 Junior Young Friends (aged 12–17) and 7 adult helpers gathered over the Easter weekend in the lovely bush setting of Eumeralla Scout Camp, on Wadawurrung Country at Anglesea, Victoria.

Top 5 Standouts

  1. Welcome to Country — Soon after arrival, we gathered in the outdoor chapel overlooking the beautiful waters and contours of the area traditionally called Kuarka Dorla, meaning “fishing place for mullet.” Local traditional owner Corrina Eccles helped us learn to be more connected to Country and about the history of the land. We saw the land and water with fresh eyes.
  2. Team Obstacle Course — Set in the bush at the camp, this encouraged creativity, teamwork, and mutual support. It helped build a strong sense of community within our group.
  3. Learning about Myanmar — A session with Jessica, Quakers Australia Peaceworker, helped us connect with other communities and understand global events. We reflected on the idea that “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” (Max Lucado)
  4. Canoeing — Canoeing in the river encouraged us to connect with people we hadn’t yet spent time with. Teamwork was essential to avoid spinning in circles, and we deepened our connection to the land and water.
  5. Connection and Courage — Many of us found it meaningful to connect with others our age who share similar values. The camp encouraged us to take social risks and show the unedited version of ourselves, especially during Meetings for Worship and group sessions.

The camp encouraged me (and maybe others) to take social risks in showing the unedited version of myself… I felt that I could trust these people to listen to me with open ears, and if what I said didn’t feel right, they would still accept me.

It was clear that a strong theme of connection ran throughout the camp — to nature, to our group, and to the wider world. The JYFs demonstrated courage in trying new experiences, sharing personal thoughts and feelings, and even in attending the camp in the first place, as many did not know each other beforehand.

We’re looking forward to the next JYF camp at Yearly Meeting in January 2027. All JYFs are welcome.
